(To celebrate the upcoming Lunar New Year, the Language Center of National University of Kaohsiung recently organized a “Dumpling-Making Cultural Experience” for international students. The event invited students to engage with Taiwan’s traditional festive culture by making dumplings, which symbolize reunion and good fortune. The activity was successfully completed, creating a warm and lively atmosphere while leaving students with a meaningful cultural memory.)
(The activity featured a DIY dumpling kit prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, allowing students to safely and fully engage in the cooking process—from mixing fillings and wrapping dumplings to boiling them. Instructors provided step-by-step guidance, including ingredient introduction, filling proportions, wrapping techniques, and cooking methods. Students not only learned how to make well-shaped dumplings, but also chose their own flavors, prepared the fillings, and completed the entire cooking process, resulting in dishes that were both visually appealing and delicious.)
(The Language Center noted that dumplings carry deep cultural significance in Chinese society, especially during the Lunar New Year, symbolizing reunion, prosperity, and sharing. This activity extended language learning into a festive, real-life context, allowing students to naturally use Mandarin in communication while experiencing Taiwan’s traditional culture and holiday atmosphere.)
(Several participating students shared that the experience—from being unfamiliar with dumpling-making to eventually tasting their own creations—was highly rewarding. They also gained a deeper understanding of the Taiwanese spirit of “cooking and sharing together.” Some students described the event as feeling like a warm pre-Lunar New Year gathering, rather than just a cooking lesson.)
(The Language Center of National University of Kaohsiung has long been committed to creating a diverse learning environment that integrates language learning and cultural experiences. Through activities rooted in daily life and traditional festivals, the center helps international students understand Taiwanese culture and integrate into society, making language not just a subject, but a bridge connecting people. The center will continue to develop more in-depth and meaningful cultural programs, ensuring that every moment of learning Mandarin is enriched with cultural insight and real-life engagement.)
