The activity used a DIY dumpling kit from Guomao Wu Ma Jia(果貿吳媽家), prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. This professional preparation allowed students to focus on the complete cooking process, from mixing the fillings and wrapping the dumplings to boiling them. Instructors provided step-by-step guidance covering ingredient selection, filling proportions, wrapping techniques, and cooking methods. Students selected their preferred flavors, mixed the fillings themselves, practiced shaping the dumplings, and finally cooked their own creations.

The Language Center explained that dumplings carry deep cultural significance in Chinese-speaking communities. They are especially meaningful during the Lunar New Year, when they represent family reunion, good fortune, and sharing. By extending language learning into a festive, real-life context, the activity encouraged students to use Mandarin naturally while working together. At the same time, they experienced Taiwanese holiday traditions and developed a closer connection with the society in which they were studying.

Several participating students shared that the experience—from initially being unfamiliar with dumpling making to finally tasting their own creations—was highly rewarding. They also gained a deeper appreciation of the Taiwanese family spirit of “cooking and sharing together.” Some students described the event as feeling like a warm gathering before the Lunar New Year, rather than simply a cooking lesson.

The Language Center of National University of Kaohsiung is committed to creating a diverse learning environment that integrates language education with cultural experiences. Through activities connected to everyday life and traditional festivals, the center helps international students understand Taiwanese culture and participate more fully in local society. Language therefore becomes more than a classroom subject—it serves as a bridge connecting people, communities, and cultures. The center will continue to develop meaningful cultural programs that enrich Mandarin learning with cultural understanding and real-life engagement.
