About us

NUK Language Center

Established on August 20, 2002, the Language Center of National University of Kaohsiung is committed to building a comprehensive learning environment for English, foreign languages, and Mandarin education. By integrating diverse learning resources, the center provides quality language learning and extension education services for NUK students and faculty, overseas Chinese students, exchange students, international students, and the general public.

As a university-level center, our main responsibilities include:

  1. Providing English and foreign language extension education services for NUK students, faculty, and the general public.
  2. Organizing various English and foreign language proficiency tests and related examination services.
  3. Providing Mandarin language education services for overseas Chinese students, exchange students, international students, and foreign residents in Taiwan.
  4. Offering commissioned English, foreign language, and Mandarin training programs for government agencies, schools, domestic and international institutions, enterprises, and organizations.
  5. Promoting other matters related to English, foreign language, and Mandarin education and training.

Based on teaching and administrative needs, the center consists of the following two divisions:

  1. English and Foreign Language Teaching Division.
  2. Mandarin Teaching Division.

English and Foreign Language Teaching Division

The English and Foreign Language Teaching Division offers a wide range of language courses, including daily conversation, language proficiency test preparation, workplace language applications, and second foreign language learning. These courses help learners improve their language proficiency and practical communication skills according to their individual needs.

◎ English and Foreign Language Extension Courses:

  • English Courses: Courses include English conversation, English writing, workplace English, and business English, helping learners develop practical communication and application skills.
  • Second Foreign Language Courses: Courses include Japanese, Korean, French, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Spanish, and other languages, providing learners with diverse language learning options.
  • Language Proficiency Test Preparation Courses: Courses include TOEIC, GEPT, IELTS, TOEFL, and related mock tests and test-taking training.

◎ Workforce Development and Workplace Training Courses:

  • The center offers courses such as English for Workplace Professionals, Business and Industrial English Training, Business English Translation and Writing, Basic Chinese-English Translation, and Current Affairs English for Emerging Industries to help working professionals enhance their workplace language competitiveness.

◎ English and Foreign Language Corporate Training Courses:

  • Customized courses may be designed according to the needs of government agencies, schools, enterprises, or organizations, including English conversation, business English, business presentation in English, TOEIC preparation, GEPT preparation, basic business English writing, Chinese-English translation, and other professional English courses.

Mandarin Teaching Division

The Mandarin Teaching Division mainly serves international students, foreign residents in Taiwan, foreign employees of enterprises, and groups with Mandarin learning needs. Through small-group classes, one-on-one instruction, and customized programs, the division emphasizes learners’ individual needs and classroom interaction, helping students improve their Mandarin proficiency, workplace communication skills, and practical language use in daily life.

Based on students’ proficiency levels and learning goals, the center offers elementary, intermediate, and advanced Mandarin courses. The curriculum covers listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, with course content adjusted progressively according to students’ levels. In addition to general Mandarin courses, the center may also offer presentation skills in Mandarin, intensive beginner Mandarin, workplace Mandarin, and industry-specific customized Mandarin courses according to the needs of students or enterprises.

◎ General Mandarin Courses:

  • Elementary Mandarin: Basic vocabulary and pronunciation, fundamental sentence patterns and grammar, and daily conversation.
  • Intermediate Mandarin: Daily conversation, oral expression training, short reading selections, and writing practice.
  • Advanced Mandarin: Advanced reading, writing training, listening comprehension, and theme-based oral expression.

◎ Applied Mandarin Courses:

  • Media Mandarin: Using newspapers, magazines, radio programs, and news reports as learning materials to enhance students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Business Mandarin: Learning Mandarin expressions for business contexts, business correspondence, and practical workplace communication.
  • Presentation Skills in Mandarin: Training students to design presentation structures, deliver oral presentations, explain information, and respond to questions in Mandarin, helping them improve presentation skills for academic, workplace, or corporate settings.
  • Computing and Writing in Mandarin: Familiarizing students with Mandarin word processing and basic computer applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Basic Mandarin Writing: Strengthening sentence organization, paragraph writing, and expression skills in Mandarin.

◎ Mandarin Corporate Training and Industry-Specific Customized Courses:

  • Intensive Beginner Mandarin Course: Designed for learners with no Mandarin background or first-time Mandarin learners. The course includes basic pronunciation, common vocabulary, daily conversation, and practical sentence patterns to help learners build basic communication skills within a short period of time.
  • Workplace Mandarin Course: Designed according to the needs of enterprises or organizations, with course content covering workplace communication, understanding work instructions, meeting conversations, customer reception, workplace safety expressions, and cross-cultural communication to help foreign employees adapt to their work environment.
  • Industry-Specific Customized Mandarin Course: Courses may be customized for different industries, such as the semiconductor industry, manufacturing industry, screw and fastener industry, traditional industries, and service industry. Industry-related vocabulary, workplace situations, on-site communication, and practical needs are integrated into the course design.
  • Commissioned Training Programs for Groups or Institutions: The center accepts commissions from government agencies, schools, enterprises, and various organizations to design Mandarin training programs based on students’ levels, course objectives, course hours, and learning contexts.

Multicultural Activities and Learning Experiences

In addition to language courses, the Language Center actively organizes multicultural activities that extend language learning beyond the classroom. These activities allow learners to experience culture, use language in real-life contexts, and deepen their understanding of Taiwanese society and local life.

◎ Activity Content:

  • Off-campus learning activities and cultural visits, campus-based themed festival activities, Taiwanese festive culture experiences, ecological and local culture exploration, cultural walks, and guided local tours.

◎ Activity Examples:

  • Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage Cultural Experience Course: Combining cultural instruction with on-site participation, this course guides international students into the pilgrimage setting. Through observation, interaction, and hands-on participation, students gain a deeper understanding of Taiwanese folk beliefs and religious culture while improving their Mandarin application and cross-cultural communication skills in real-life contexts.
  • Dumpling-Making Cultural Experience for International Students: Held during the Lunar New Year season, this activity invites international students to make dumplings by hand, experience Taiwanese festive culture, and use Mandarin for communication during the activity.
  • Maolin Ecological Field Trip: Organized during the purple crow butterfly migration season, this activity brings international students to the Maolin National Scenic Area. Through ecological guidance and tribal cultural experiences, students learn about Taiwan’s natural environment and cultural characteristics.
